It comes from care — about their community and the decisions shaping its future.

Before putting your name forward, it helps to understand what the role actually involves.

At its core, municipal office is a public service role, not a political platform. It is not about visibility or performance. It is about responsibility for decisions that shape everyday life in a community.

Councillors and mayors help make decisions about budgets, infrastructure, planning, housing, and local services. These decisions rarely have simple answers. They involve trade-offs, limited resources, and competing needs that must be weighed and decided collectively.

Much of the work also happens outside the council chamber. Councillors spend time reading agendas, reviewing reports, and preparing for decisions before meetings take place. They attend committee meetings, participate in public consultations, engage with community events, and meet with residents on local issues. A significant part of the role happens before any vote is ever cast.

The mayor carries many of the same responsibilities while also providing leadership to council and representing the municipality at the county level through Oxford County Council, where broader regional decisions are made in collaboration with other local municipalities.

No one begins this role fully prepared. Municipal government operates within provincial legislation, local bylaws, financial constraints, and established processes. New councillors are supported by municipal staff and learn through experience. What matters most is not expertise at the outset, but a willingness to learn, ask questions, and take the responsibility seriously.

It is also a collaborative role. Individual councillors cannot direct staff or make decisions on their own. Council works through discussion, disagreement, and collective decision-making. Progress depends on working with others, even when perspectives differ.

Listening becomes just as important as speaking.

This is a public role, and it comes with public scrutiny. Residents will not always agree with decisions, particularly when it comes to taxes, development, infrastructure, or local services. Those concerns are part of the work, and they must be weighed alongside the broader needs of the community.

Even though municipal council positions are formally considered part-time in Oxford County, the actual time commitment extends well beyond scheduled meetings.

Councillors and mayors receive compensation for their service, but the role is best understood as public stewardship rather than employment in the traditional sense.

Across Ontario, municipal elections are sometimes filled by acclamation simply because not enough candidates come forward. When that happens, communities lose something important — not only choice on a ballot, but the opportunity for ideas to be tested, debated, and shaped in public.

Healthy local government depends on participation, including from people willing to serve.

The most effective councillors are not the ones who arrive convinced they already have everything figured out. They are the ones willing to learn, listen, prepare, and carry responsibility for decisions that affect their community.

If you are thinking about running, start by learning more in simple ways. Attend a council meeting. Read an agenda. Talk to someone who has served. Pay attention to how decisions are made where you live.

You do not need to be an expert before you begin.

It is about stepping into service — and recognizing that communities are shaped, over time, by people willing to take that responsibility seriously.

One response to “What It Means to Serve on Municipal Council”

Rosemary Rudy

June 6, 2026

Excellent article with the important message of a councillor’s role being to serve the community and not used for political power.

Reply

Leave a Reply Cancel reply

Your email address will not be published. Required fields are marked *

Comment *

Name *

Email *

Website

Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.

<input type="checkbox" name="subscribe_comments" id="subscribe_comments" value="subscribe" style="width: auto;
