Zero Poverty. 100% Renewable. 100% Housed.

They’re hard to miss. But so are the mixed messages behind them.

While County officials promote this “Zero/100%” ideology, Oxford families are being stretched to their limits. Property taxes have jumped 6.6% this year (2025) — on top of a 16.7% increase in 2024. That’s two years in a row of steep hikes, and the impact is being felt in every household, rental unit, and small business across the County.

Each increase drives up costs for homeowners and renters alike. And when the County raises taxes faster than wages or inflation, it’s not moving toward Zero Poverty or 100% Housed — it’s pushing in the opposite direction. Higher taxes mean higher rents. Higher rents mean more families struggling to stay housed.

So while the signs declare Zero Poverty, the financial reality for many Oxford residents is anything but.

To make matters worse, there’s no clear public motion showing who approved the expense for these signs or how much they cost. We’ve searched County agendas and minutes — no detailed vote, no breakdown, no tender report. Just another feel-good project unveiled without full transparency.

It’s not that residents don’t care about the environment or renewable goals. But people in Oxford want local priorities first: fair taxes, affordable housing, and open government. That’s what real sustainability looks like — not slogans printed on steel.

If the County wants to brand itself as “100% Renewable” and “Zero Poverty,” maybe it should start with 100% Transparency — because until it can show where they’re spending our tax dollars, “Zero Transparency” fits the slogan better than the spending.

4 responses to “Zero Transparency, Higher Taxes: Oxford’s Priorities Are Out of Balance”

lynda cyples

October 25, 2025

Property taxes for me, are becoming too expensive.

Reply

Stand4Oxford Editorial Team

October 27, 2025

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
