Instead of exercising restraint during uncertain economic times, the majority of Council chose higher costs, additional consultants, and increased pressure on families, seniors, and local businesses who are already feeling stretched.

A few councillors—Mayor Acchione, Mayor Gilvesy, and Councillor Tait—clearly understood the concerns being raised by residents and demonstrated a commitment to responsible stewardship. Throughout the budget process, they asked questions, brought forward motions, and consistently pushed for greater fiscal restraint. We thank them for being voices of reason and for genuinely representing the people of Oxford County.

Marie Russell: A Strong Voice for the Community

We also want to recognize Stand4Oxford’s spokesperson, Marie Russell, who presented our petition—signed by more than 1,300 residents—to Council and delivered a clear, compelling delegation on behalf of the community. Marie spoke directly to the need for accountability, fiscal responsibility, and respect for taxpayers.

Her courage, dedication, and leadership exemplify the kind of advocacy our community needs. Thank you, Marie.

Marie’s delegation can be viewed at 06:00.

A Growing Disconnect From the Community

Many residents urged Council to exercise careful stewardship of public funds amid challenging economic times. The decision ultimately made by Council, however, reflects a concerning disconnect from the realities facing people across Oxford County. Families, seniors, and local businesses are under real financial strain—and they were looking for meaningful action, not continued overspending.

That disconnect was also evident during the budget debate itself. According to information raised during the December 10 meeting, the proposed budget included 25 new full-time positions. After discussion and individual votes, 19 of these positions were approved, two were removed, four were deferred, and one was added. In addition, more than 70 new staff members had been added earlier in the current term. It was also noted that County employees listed on the 2024 sunshine list—those earning over $100,000 annually—collectively represent over $20 million in salary costs; this figure does not include other employees who earn less and are not on the sunshine list. Despite motions aimed at reducing these additions, the majority of Council retained nearly all of the proposed new positions, illustrating a gap between fiscal restraint concerns raised by residents and the final budget outcome.

The decision to keep most of the proposed positions highlights a larger pattern of Council choices that residents are following with keen interest.

Eyes on the Ball for 2026

It’s important to remember that 2026 is an election year. That election will give residents the opportunity to choose leaders who listen, who value transparency, and who put the public interest ahead of bloated bureaucracies and unchecked spending.

Stand4Oxford remains committed to informing residents, engaging the community, and mobilizing for meaningful, positive change in Oxford County.

The message from residents is clear: we are engaged, we are paying attention, and we expect better from those elected to represent us.

Join Us in Making a Difference

We welcome your support as we continue advocating for a more responsible and responsive local government. Even though the council doesn’t usually talk about the mill rate, it’s essentially how the town turns its budget into property taxes. Property assessments haven’t been updated since 2016, so any increase in taxes depends on both the outdated assessment values and the council’s budget choices. That’s why it’s important to make sure any increases are necessary, fair, and transparent.

Reply

Leave a Reply Cancel reply

Your email address will not be published. Required fields are marked *

Comment *

Name *

Email *

Website

Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.

Notify me of follow-up comments by email.

Notify me of new posts by email.

Δ

Oxford County, we need to talk.
