As members of the Stand4Oxford team worked through Oxford County’s new Official Plan survey, one thing stood out: some questions require more thought than they first appear to.

Planning decisions are complex, and the wording of a question matters. A response may seem straightforward, but the meaning behind that answer can depend on how the question is understood.

A helpful question for residents to ask themselves is:

“What is this question asking me to support?”
versus
“What do I actually believe and want decision-makers to understand?”

Those answers aren’t always the same.

For example, many residents may support goals like strong communities, housing opportunities, or a prosperous future for Oxford County. But the important details are in the “how,” “where,” and “what impact” behind those goals.

That’s why residents should take the time to read each question carefully and consider what their answer could communicate. If the available choices don’t fully reflect your perspective, use the comment sections or the “Other” option to explain your thoughts.

The Official Plan will help shape Oxford County for decades to come. Your input matters — but your voice is most effective when your answers accurately reflect your priorities and your vision for the future.

Oxford County’s Official Plan survey is open until August 31, 2026. Before submitting your responses, take the time to understand the questions, consider the implications, and share the perspective you want decision-makers to hear.

Read carefully. Consider the implications. Share your perspective.

Good governance starts close to home — with informed citizens who take the time to participate.
