Oxford County is asking residents for feedback on proposed new water meters with cellular technology.
The survey highlights features such as real-time water usage, leak alerts, service notifications, water-use comparisons, and more frequent data collection.
Some of these features may provide value. Leak alerts, for example, could help homeowners identify problems quickly.
However, residents should also be asking important questions about the information being collected.
A traditional water meter measures water usage for billing purposes. Newer smart meters can collect and transmit usage data more frequently, creating a much more detailed picture of household water consumption.
Before moving forward, Oxford County should clearly explain:
- What data will be collected?
- How often will it be transmitted?
- Who will have access to it?
- How long will it be stored?
- Could it be used for purposes beyond billing and system management?
Residents should also consider whether some proposed “features” are actually services municipalities should already be providing. For example, notifying residents about planned water disruptions is a basic communication responsibility — it should not require a smart meter or an app.
Technology can be useful, but convenience should not come at the expense of transparency and accountability.
We encourage residents to review Oxford County’s survey and provide feedback. Informed citizens asking thoughtful questions are essential to good governance.
